Hays Fire Department Museum
The Hays Firemen's Relief Association began working with ECHS in April 2008 to bring the Hays Fire Department Museum to the grounds. They graciously built and donated to us is a replica of the Fire Station built in 1927 at the corner of 11th and Fort streets. The original station was the first in Hays to staff full-time firefighters. The museum opened to visitors in April 2012.
We believe that the Hays Fire Department formed c. May 1885, when the city incorporated.
It was said that any man who "could lift a pail of water," volunteered on the bucket brigade. The Hays Volunteer Fire Department received its charter as a member of the Kansas Firemen's Relief Association on December 23, 1895. At that time, there were a total of sixteen volunteer firefighters.
